Algal bloom monitoring July 21, 2016: Cyanobacteria increased in the Finnish Baltic Sea areas, and decreased in lakes

Press release 2016-07-21 at 12:55

More cyanobacteria have been observed in the Gulf of Finland and Archipelago Sea than a week ago. Instead, in lakes surface blooms of cyanobacteria have decreased. During late summer, mass occurrences of rust fungi spores can form brownish, yellowish or rust red surface blooms in lakes. Surface blooms caused by rust fungi spores have been reported this summer for instance in Southeastern Finland and Southern Savonia.
