Current task

I’m a researcher in Research Vessels group of the SYKE's Marine Research Centre. I’m also a doctoral student in DENVI doctoral program  majoring in Aquatic sciences, and a member of FEM (Fisheries and Environmental Management) research group in the University of Helsinki.

Background

I have master’s degrees in marine biology (MSc 2015) and language technology (MA 2007). Before becoming a

marine researcher I worked in IT for 15 years, mostly in business data management and analytics.

Reseach topics

My research topics include underwater soundscapes, anthropogenic and natural sounds and their significance and impact for marine ecosystem, underwater noise, its impacts and management in the Baltic Sea as well as marine bioacoustics. My goal is to improve our understanding about the causes and effects of underwater noise, and how acoustical conditions of the environment can impact the lives of aquatic species. The focus is on environmental change, and the sensitivity of populations and species to man-made changes in their acoustical environment.

Projects

A project focusing on environmental impact of underwater noise funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.

I take part in HELCOM expert network for the management of underwater noise impacts in the Baltic Sea.
