  • Coordination of the research program on environmental data acquisition and application

Tasks

As a member of the Monitor2020 project core group I participate in setting national strategic targets for the gathering, storage and utilization of environmental data. At the Finnish Environmental Institute (SYKE), I manage a research program focused on SYKE’s research efforts related to environmental data acquisition and use. I am head of SYKE’s Jyväskylä office and currently supervise two  PhD. students.

Special tasks

  • National chairperson for ISO WG147/SC5 “Water quality” and CEN TC 230/WG2 “Water quality” standardization
  • Member of the core group of the EurAqua network
  • Member of the research coordinators of the PEER network
  • Management Committee member of the COST action DNAqua-Net
  • Responsible for national macroinvertebrate taxonomic proficiency testing within the reference laboratory framework
  • External member of the faculty council of the  Faculty of Mathematics and Science of the University of Jyväskylä

Research interests

  • Development and application of novel monitoring approaches
  • Aquatic community responses to landuse with emphasis on peatland use
  • Application of advanced statistical methods to improve monitoring designs and indices
  • Advance the use of computer vision for automated taxa identification  (DETECT)
  • Advance the use of genomic tools for routine water monitoring (DNAqua-net)
