Ecosystem services research programme

 

 

 

The wellbeing in our society relies on the numerous services provided by ecosystems. Food and raw materials, clean water and air, recreation and many livelihoods are more or less directly dependent on the ecological processes in ecosystems. It is important to understand how the use of ecosystem services interacts with the state and dynamics of the ecosystems and how it can be governed.

The SYKE ecosystem services research programme analyses how the multiple ecosystem services and the benefits they generate can be identified and valued, what crucial ecosystem functions and biodiversity lie behind ecosystem services, what impacts environmental change, natural resource use and land use have on ecosystem services, and how ecosystems and their services can be governed in a sustainable fashion.

Our multidisciplinary research enables elaborate analyses and supports sophisticated management and protection of ecosystem services. SYKE ecosystem services research cover the two partly overlapping themes:

  1. Models of ecosystem functions and biodiversity for ecosystem service provision
  2. Ecosystem services governance and decisions with multiple values

  • Global interest in health-promoting effects of nature – international conference in Helsinki in October 2017-08-21
    Finnish competence in identifying the health-promoting effects of nature has raised international interest. An indication of this is the international workshop on the relationship between biodiversity and human health to be held for invited participants in Vuosaari, Helsinki, on 23–25 October 2017.
  • New publication out on nature-based integration 2017-06-14
    Nordic countries have real potential in becoming forerunners in nature-based integration. Nature-based solutions may have the potential of offering an efficient and cost-effective way for the successful integration of the immigrants into the Nordic societies.
  • EU Interreg Central Baltic Programme funding to the SustainBaltic project 2016-10-17
    EU Interreg Central Baltic Programme 2014-2020 is funding the implementation of the SustainBaltic project (ICZM Plans for Sustaining Coastal and Marine Human-ecological Networks in the Baltic Region) with around 1.023.000 e from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Active project period is of 27 months during 2016-2018.

  • Coastal spatial planning forms the basis for sustainable business activities 2017-06-13
    The planning of coastal spatial management enables account to be taken of the effects of land-sea activities on coastal nature and local business activities. The objective of such planning is to examine all human activities affecting coastal areas and to direct the use of coastal and marine areas on a more environmentally-friendly basis.
  • Finland to become the world's first country to fly a flag for nature – Finnish Nature Day, 26 August 2017, declared an official flag day 2016-12-02
    In 2017, Finland will become the first country in the world to honour its natural environment with an official flag day. The Ministry of the Interior has ordered that flags should be flown on Finnish Nature Day, which falls on the last Saturday of August. Next year, this will be 26 August 2017. This will round off the celebration of Nature Days – hundreds of nature events, either organised or pop-up – in honour of the 100th anniversary of Finland's independence.
  • Nitrogen deposition affects population changes of butterfly and moth species in Finland 2016-10-06
    Large, mobile and multivoltine butterflies and moths that either utilise a wide variety host plants or have adapted to feed on nitrophilous plants are becoming more common in Finnish nature. Soil eutrophication caused by nitrogen deposition from the atmosphere has had a strong impact on the species that have flourished or declined in Finland over the past few decades.
