Bioremediation of contaminated soil with fungi (PIMA-FUN)

Description

A new biological method based on basidiomycetous fungi is developed for bioremediation of soil contaminated by recalcitrant organic compounds. University of Helsinki, Helsinki University of Technology and Finnish Environment Institute will study in co-operation the degradation of four types of soil contaminants (trinitrotoluene, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, tributyltin and dioxins). In this project the emphasis is given to the field scale studies, in which the inoculation technique and the support material of the fungus will be optimized. Remediation will be monitored in order to clarify the activity of the fungus and the role of the native microbial population. Field scale studies are performed in co-operation with the participating companies.
