Environmental impact assessment of airborne particulate matter: the effects of abatement and management strategies (BATMAN)

+ Show information

Basic project information

In Finland, PM air pollution has been confirmed as the most important source of environmental burden of disease (EBD). The mainstream international evaluations regarding the effects of air pollution have focused on estimating the total attributable burden of disease in the overall population.

The overarching aim of this study is to provide new quantitative and reliable information on the optimal procedures for the reduction of PM air pollution and the associated environmental burden of disease in Finland and in Europe. The project will provide recommendations and guidance on the air pollution assessment methodologies. It will also evaluate and inter-compare the exposure and predicted exposure to PM and associated health effects. It will evaluate quantitatively the impact of the spatial resolution of the emission and dispersion computations and model the relevant aerosol processes for both the local and regional scale.
