SYKE develops integrated assessment modeling (IAM) of air pollution to support decision-making, as well as research. The objective of international and national IAMs is to support the assessment of mitigation opportunities and costs of air pollution and their impacts on health and climate. The use of coherent assessment frameworks to evaluate several air pollutants and their impacts enables the development of multi-objective emission mitigation strategies and contributes to the process towards better climate, human health and state of environment.

The most important IAMs used by the FRES research team are the Finnish Regional Emission Scenario model (FRES) and the international GAINS model of IIASA. Long-term cooperation with national and international research groups has enabled the creation of a comprehensive assessment framework and scientifically proven results. The FRES model is also used as a national reference model to the GAINS model, i.a. in the work of Task Force on Integrated Assessment Modelling (TFIAM) under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
