Life Cycle Assessment of the Finnish farmed rainbow trout: update of the 2002 study

Project description

The life cycle environmental impacts of the Finnish farmed rainbow trout were assessed by SYKE and FGFRI in a project that ended in 2002. An average farming method was compared to different alternative methods. Additionally, rainbow trout meat was compared to beef and pork as well as to Baltic Herring from the point of view of life cycle environmental impacts.

The study was based on the situation in the end of 1990's. After that fish farming methods - e.g. feeds and feeding - have changed. This has had an effect for instance on the nutrient releases from the farms. Furthermore, more accurate life cycle inventory data related on fish farming and adjoining systems have been produced. For reference products (pork, beef, broiler meat) better estimates on environmental impacts have been produced, and production methods have improved as well. A new idea related on compensation of the nutrient emissions of fish farming has been introduced.  In this method, fish farmers would pay to fishermen for removing low value fish from the sea thus removing nutrients from the sea area affected by the fish farming. This and other alternative options (e.g. nutrient recycling, land based farming) related to fish farming in the Finnish Archipelago area are studied in the project.

The project will produce up to date results on life cycle environmental impacts of Finnish rainbow trout for farmers, consumers and authorities.
