Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and the Finnish Economy (SURE)

+ Show information

Basic project information

Project description

The project will evaluate opportunities for decoupling Finnish economic growth from the use of natural resources and environmental impacts. The relationship between resource use and environmental impacts in the context of the global economy has also been analysed. Thus, the assessment is divided into two parts: 1) the effects at home and abroad of the domestic final use of products – for private and public consumption and for capital formation - of the Finnish economy and 2) the balance of natural resource use and environmental impacts of Finnish imports and exports.

The specific focus sectors are mining and bioenergy, which are currently undergoing significant changes.

The analysis will be conducted by the long run environmentally extended multi-sector simulation model ENVIMATscen.  In the project the model will be complemented by general models of material flows; land use and biodiversity; and by the specific sector models for mining and bioenergy.

The project is funded by Academy of Finland. The main applicant was Thule Institute of the University of Oulu. Docent Ilmo Mäenpää is a responsible leader of the project.
