Environmental management system EkoSYKE

The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) takes responsibility for the environmental impacts of its own acitivities. SYKE also wants to set example on measures in reducing the environmental burden of its activities in and outside the office.

Therefore SYKE has developed an environmental management system, known as EkoSYKE. The environmental management system was certified according to ISO 14001 in 2006, and the certification was renewed 2009, 2012 and 2015. The cerfication covers SYKE's offices and laboratories in Helsinki, Jyväskylä and Oulu, and a research vessel Aranda.

EkoSYKE focuses on travelling, energy consumption, SYKE's procurements, waste management and the research vessel Aranda. There is a systematic evaluation process for all projects at SYKE for the environmental impacts as well.

SYKE has set the following overall environmental objectives:

  • To become a carbon neutral organization by 2017
  • To reduce harmful effects of our procurements on nature and water system
  • To increase employees’ awareness and positive attitude towards environmental issues and encourage them to take environmental issues into consideration in their every day life.

To achieve the objectives, many concrete measures are implemented. For monitoring the progress and for providing assurance of contious imporevement, various indicators are used and regular enviromental audits conducted.

The most important results are published annually in a short summary.
