Versatile water expertise in Finland and around the world

Surface waters and ground waters are an important part of the story of Finnish society and Finnish Environment Institute (Syke). We monitor the amount, status and changes of water and develop solutions for the use, management and protection of water resources.

For water-related decision-making, we produce societal and economic assessments. We increase ecological understanding on the operation of water environments and develop methods for reconciling the sometimes conflicting goals of the use and management of water resources.

Finnish Environment Institute is the only research institute in Finland that considers the Baltic Sea, inland waters and ground waters as a single entity. We identify the most effective ways of repairing waterways and decreasing nutrient pollution and the impacts of hazardous substances. We use a national water system model to produce real time water status predictions.

For example, we develop tools for managing floods and assessing the effects and cost-effectiveness of the management of water resources.

We are involved in domestic and international research cooperation, and we share our high-quality expertise internationally.

“Our expertise revolves around high-quality and long-term research and development work, hydrology and the assessment and monitoring of eutrophication and water quality.”
