Present role

I am a group leader of Water Management and Governance group in Freshwater Centre.

Background

From my background education I am a civil engineer. In 2011, I completed my doctoral thesis for Aalto University, Systems Analysis Laboratory. In the thesis, I summarised 20 years experiences of applying Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) in participatory water resources management.

I have been a project manager in many nationally important water resources management projects and participated EU working group which developed guidelines to heavily modified waterbodies. I have organised training courses related to the use of MCDA in environmental planning and decision making in Georgia and Laos.

Current research interests

In 2015-2016 I worked as a senior researcher at Swiss Federal Institute of Water and Technology (Eawag) in the Decision Analysis cluster. During this period I was able to deepen my understanding about MCDA and particularly how problem structuring phase in MCDA can be improved.

  • Improving environmental planning with portfolio decision analysis (2019-2023, Academy of Finland)
  • Water security and resilience, Winland-project (2016-2019)
  • Cognitive biases and risk attitudes in the operative watercourse regulation and environmental planning
  • Problem structuring in messy problems

Publications

I have published more than 20 peer reviewed articles from several topics including problem structuring methods, environmental MCDA applications, environmental impact assessments, participatory planning methods and adaptive management.
