Baltic Environment, Food and Health: From Habits To Awareness (FOODWEB)

Basic project information

Objectives

The main objectives of the FOODWEB project are to demonstrate the two-way relationship between people, food quality and the environment:

  • how the environment affects to our food and health, 
  • how the human activities affect to the environment.


The project aims to raise the awareness of environmental effects of food production and consumption, but also the awareness of possible food related risks to human health. The project area includes Finland, Estonia and Latvia but the target area is planned to cover the whole Baltic Sea and its surroundings.

Solutions, as said, are sought by raising consumers’ awareness. In that way, it might be possible to control the demand and even further, to influence on the land use and ecosystem services, food safety and to support the responsible choices. The used tools in the project are: food life cycle assessment (LCA), carbon footprint, risk indices and indices of environmental sustainability. The project will also develop a Foodplate calculating tool, by which, it is easy to compare carbon footprints, nutritional values and possible chemical exposure of different food items in several lunch choices. Tools are also used as a link between the protection of the Baltic Sea and the food safety evaluation in the study region.

Project is led by Agrifood Research Finland (MTT). Other partners are Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), University of Tartu, Science Centre AHHAA and University of Latvia.
