Present role

I work as a senior researcher in the Freshwater Centre of SYKE. My main research topic is the application of multi-criteria decision analysis to support environmental decision making. More specific application areas include watercourse regulation, ecosystem services and environmental impact assessment.

I completed my Master’s and Doctoral theses on the field of applied mathematics and operations research at the Systems Analysis Laboratory of the Helsinki University of Technology (nowadays Aalto University). I also worked as a researcher at the laboratory for ten years. In my doctoral thesis, I developed decision analytical methods and software for supporting them, as well as applied those in practice, for example, in the projects related to watercourse regulation. After that, I worked three years as a post-doctoral researcher on the same research areas at the Tampere University of Technology, where I also have a docentship on the field of decision analysis. Since 2012, I have worked at SYKE in applying the results of my earlier studies in practice.

Current research interests

  • Evaluation of ecosystem services with multi-criteria decision analysis
  • Developing practices for improving watercourse regulation
  • Supporting the analysis of the issues related to Finnish overall security, and especially water security
