Present role

I work as a flood risk management, flood mapping, and flood modelling expert. My work involves managing and designing development projects related to flood risk management and flood mapping, working in projects, and expert services for local authorities and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. I also act as flood risk expert at national Flood Centre.

Background

I graduated from Helsinki University of Technology 1988 (M.Sc.).  In the early stages of my career, I worked in a consulting firm, where I used a variety of flow models for flood studies and dam break hazard analyses. My job included also the development of models, and my thesis was about modelling of river ice processes. I started in SYKE in 1998 and my work has included flow modelling, development of flood mapping and flood risk management and later coordination and management of projects. I also was several years a member in the EU Working Group on Floods. During my whole career I have been interested about river ice processes and I am a member of CRIPE (Committee on River Ice Processes and the Environment).

Current research interests

  • Development of flood risk management and flood mapping
  • Development of surface water flood modelling and flood mapping for pluvial floods
  • River ice and modelling of river ice processes
