Current task
As the director of the SYKE's Marine Research Centre my main resposibilities are as follows
- leadership and management of SYKE's marine research centre
- a member of directory board of SYKE
- leading international cooperation, external relations, outreach and communication
- leading project development activities
SYKE's Marine Research Centre is responsible for monitoring the status of the Baltic Sea for Finnish government. It is the main research unit in Finland that carries out scientific marine environmental research mostly in externally funded projects. It hosts the Finnish marine monitoring data bases, runs Finnish Research Vessel Aranda and the Marine Ecology Laboratory, coordinates the consortium of Finnish Marine Infrastructure (FINMARI) and the development of multi-sectoral national Marine Information Portal. The staff of the centre is about 100 scientists and experts.
Expertise and education
I have thirty years knowledge on international environmental cooperation with a particular emphasis on the arctic seas and territories. I have long experience on leading a wide range of multi-disciplinary research groups and in facilitaing related dialogues between science and policy.
I am interested in studying international environmental issues and decision making needs of the Baltic Sea and the ever increasing importance of the arctic areas within the global context.
I am Doctor of Philosophy that I received in the University of Helsinki, Department of Geography in 1998.
Background
2000–2015 Director of the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland, the Centre is a multidisciplinary research institute that studies global change, climate change, sustainable development, and environmental and minority law in the circumpolar Arctic area.
1991–1999 Senior advisor at Finnish Ministry of the Environment being responsible for e.g. preparations of Finland’s international Arctic, Barents and Antarctic environmental co-operation.
