Threatened habitat types in Finland 2018: the Baltic Sea

News 2020-11-04 at 10:35

The threat status of Finnish habitat types was assessed for the second time in 2018. This report was now produced in English for the 48 marine habitat types of the Baltic Sea to facilitate international cooperation, for example HELCOM work. The same material will be integrated into the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems Database, where both global and regional Red List assessments will be collected.

“English translations of the descriptions of Baltic Sea habitats are useful  for the cooperation around the Baltic Sea, as well as on the level of Europe or the whole globe”, says Senior Research Scientist Tytti Kontula from the Biodiversity Centre of the Finnish Environment Institute. “Our colleagues in the Nordic countries and at the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems -network seem to be very pleased to get access to this Finnish material, as we are one of the leading countries in the redlisting of habitats / ecosystems.”
