Keeping the Arctic White: Regulatory Options for Reducing Short-Lived Climate Forcers in the Arctic (WHITE)

Short-lived climate forcers (SLCFs) include black carbon, methane, tropospheric ozone and some hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). These pollutants have a significant short-term warming influence on the climate, especially in sensitive regions like the Arctic. Rapid actions to cut SLCF emissions could complement CO2 mitigation efforts in the short-term and buy more time for implementing radical cuts in global CO2 emissions and transitioning to a low-carbon economy.

The objective of WHITE project is to identify ways to strengthen the regulatory framework for reducing SLCF emissions in the Arctic on the basis of latest research on SLCF emission models and climate change impacts of the various regulatory options. SYKE project team will study and develop emissions scenarios for the different regulatory options to reduce SLCFs in the Arctic. The work will focus specifically on the emissions of black carbon and methane. Policy-relevant outcomes of the project will be communicated to end-users in the context of, e.g., UNFCC and Arctic Council.
