Mitigating the impacts of climate change on biodiversity in the Barents Region, BARIMS, 1st phase

Project description

The aim of the BARIMS project is to enhance regional co-operation in the light of sustainable development and safeguarding biodiversity in the Barents Euro-Arctic Region. Pilot areas for assessing the distribution of biodiversity will be studied in the member regions of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council (BEAC) and means for safeguarding nature values and ecosystem functions as a part of mitigation of and adaptation to climate change will discussed.

Existing information will be compiled and new data sources will be identified from the pilot areas consisting of terrestrial, freshwater and marine data. Statistical modeling will be used to predict current and future distribution of biodiversity in a changing climate. Workshops and seminars will be organized to evaluate the usage of compiled information, e.g. for land use planning needs and to identify new data needs.

Background

Climate change has already impacted the Arctic ecosystems and the distribution of species. Changes in ecosystem have led to increasing pressure on human societies within the Arctic Region to change the use of both space and natural resources. Therefore, finding solutions to prevent the harmful impacts of climate change on biodiversity and human society, as well as discovering ways to mitigate and acclimate to new conditions requires regional cooperation beyond borders. The project Mitigating the impacts of climate change on biodiversity in the Barents Region aims at defining key areas of biodiversity across land-sea interphase in a changing climate.

Instead of a traditional approach, taking into account only certain habitats or species, our aim is to study the distribution of biodiversity across physical boundaries and to include in our study data from marine, freshwater and terrestrial biodiversity. These data will then allow us to assess the impacts of changing climate on currently existing biodiversity and ecosystem services. Furthermore, based on scientific data and predictive scenarios on possible futures, the project aims at finding solutions for questions related to environmental conservation and the protection of valuable ecosystem services within the region. This will be done by incorporating expert knowledge with stakeholder view and values, which will provide opportunities to sustainable use of natural resources and valuable ecosystem services.

The project will provide a unique opportunity to produce transboundary knowledge to support climate wise decision making in local, regional and international level. The already existing network of project partners, good tradition of Finnish-Russian cooperation and direct contacts to policy processes will allow both the fluent realization of the project and the efficient communication of project results for stakeholders.

The main activities in the BARIMS project are

  • To compile existing spatial data on selected catchment areas and bordering marine areas, that are significant for biodiversity.
  • To find means to evaluate the effects of climate change to the nature values, ecosystems and use of nature resources of the selected catchment areas.
  • To identify main actions, that need to be taken for safeguarding biodiversity and nature-based economics in the Barents Euro-Arctic Region.
