First seminar: Action research for sustainability transformations

We invite you to share your experiences in conducting action-oriented research and discuss the various approaches together with your colleagues

We invite together researchers from three different research organisations (SYKE, CDE, SPRU) which all concentrate upon sustainability transformation and transition in their research and development activities. The aim of the seminar is to boost collaboration and methodological learning amongst the researchers.

The seminar consists of two parts. On Day I we hear two lectures on action-oriented research in sustainability transformation. Day II is devoted to methodological insights from research practice. The contributions to Day II provide a basis for the selection of cases for a collaborative article on action research for sustainability transformations.

The seminar series was organized as a collective effort between Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE, Finland), Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) at the University of Bern (Switzerland) and Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex (United Kingdom). The CDE engagement in the seminars was supported by the Mercator Foundation Switzerland, while the SYKE engagement was funded by SYKE seed money.

This is the first seminar in the series that was organized to boost collaboration amongst researchers in sustainability transition and transformation studies. The second seminar on just transition was held in June 2021 and the third seminar on public participation in sustainability transitions in September 2021.
