Phase 2: Real-time algal bloom forecasts and cost-benefit analysis as part of the GISBLOOM project

Phase 2 will create an algal bloom model for forecasting algal blooming in Finnish lakes. Modelled algal bloom forecasts will be combined with interpretations of algae amounts, derived from satellite images and, possibly, observations of algae by citizens.

In addition, Phase 2 will include an analysis of the costs and benefits of water protection measures. In practice, such measures aim to determine the most economical phosphorus reduction measures.

Algal bloom forecasts will also be tested under various changed situations. This is aimed at obtaining more detailed information on the effects of land use, nutrient loads and climate change.

Phase outcomes

The analysis tools and map service to be built on the Internet will enable daily monitoring of river-basin-specific algal forecasts on a map. These tools will also enable comparing the effects on blooming of various land use forms and nutrient loads as well as identifying the most cost-efficient river basin management methods
