SYKE utilises a large range of different mathematical assessment and forecasting tools for determining the state of the environment, which can in broad terms be referred to as models. The models have been developed specifically for the calculation of water resources and nutrient cycles. Areas of application are watersheds, water systems and marine areas.

The models are now also utilised more and more in new themes such as hazardous substance cycles as well as socio-economic inspections linked to forecasting the state of the marine environment.

The majority of models in use have been developed by SYKE's Freshwater and Marine Centres, but we also continuously use our partner's models. Some of the models are only suited for research and expert use, but in the future, SYKE will develop a growing number of models for use by anyone who has an interest in them.

SYKE has drawn up a roadmap for the models in water and marine resource management, which describes the targets set for development of models in the medium to long-term until 2030 and in the short-term in 2015-2017. Additionally, the road map describes the application of models in the programme of measures for the management of water and marine resources. The model road map will be updated annually.
