Funding

SYKE's core funding has decreased by almost 30% over the last ten years. Correspondingly, the number of personnel has also decreased by more than a hundred person-years compared to the peak year 2013. This has been partly due to the outsourcing of environmental management's water monitoring and related analytical services, as a result of which SYKE's laboratory operations were significantly reduced. However, the economic situation has remained under control as external financing has increased year by year. In 2019, the share of external financing was already 64%. In particular, EU funding has increased. Its share of SYKE's funding has increased from 5% to 15% in 2016–2019.

SYKE has also been very successful in applying for funding from the Strategic Research Council (SRC, STN in Finnish) and the Prime Minister's Office VN TEAS. In 2019, there were 17 SRC-funded projects underway, three of which were coordinated by SYKE. The projects coordinated by SYKE deal with adaptive water management, the links between carbon and biodiversity at the landscape level and sustainable food change. SYKE's good success in applying for VN TEAS -funding can be seen as an indication that our research and expertise meet the needs of society and decision-making, and we are able to respond flexibly to emerging issues.

SYKE is succesful in applying external competive funding. In 2019 the share was already 64%, in particular EU funding increased.
