Current tasks

My tasks include:

  • to investigate the sources, fate and effects of microplastics and engineered nanoparticles
  • to develop the analysis and characterisation methods (e.g. µFTIR, Pyr-GC-MS ja DLS) for the determination of micro- and nanoparticles from different environmental samples
  • to act as an expert of the measurement techniques of microplastics and engineered nanoparticles in national and international networks and working groups (e.g. PRIORITY (EU Cost Action), ISO/TC 147/SC 2/JWG 1 and nanoturvallisuusverkosto)
  • to supervise PhD students (currently 3)

Background

I have worked at SYKE since 2009: first as a senior research scientist in the team of inorganic chemistry, then as a group leader of New technologies and experimental effect studies (2011-2013), as a unit of head of Ecotoxicology and risk assessment (2014-2022) and currently as a leading researcher in the group of Environmental impacts. I did my PhD thesis on ”Chemical and source characterisation of size-segregated urban air particulate matter” at Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Publications

I have co-authored more than 140 scientific publications, of which more than 50 papers come out in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
