Work Description

I work in the ecotoxicology laboratory of Jyväskylä office. Most of my time goes to performing and developing various ecotoxicity test methods but I also work with equipment maintenance and laboratory quality assurance. We grow several test species stocks in our facility, such as water fleas (Daphnia magna and Daphnia longispina), aquatic snails (Lymnea stagnalis, non-biting midges (Chironomus riparius) ja aquatic worms (Lumbriculus variegatus ja Tubifex tubifex). I can be caught in the lab wielding a spanner, a pipette or a handful of lettuce for the snails. I’ve also coordinated proficiency tests on testing coloured samples with bioluminescent bacteria test together with SYKE’s proftest operations.

Background

I have a M.Sc. degree from the University of Jyväskylä where I majored in Environmental Science and Technology. I specialized in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Analysis and minored in chemistry to support my knowledge in various hazardous chemicals. In my masters thesis I studied the phytotoxicity of short chained carboxylic acid mixtures. I have worked for SYKE since 2011.

Current Research Interests

  • Various ecotoxicity tests and their further development
  • Laboratory quality assurance
  • Proficiency testing for ecotoxicity tests
