Schools meet society - Insights for updating sustainability education

Seminar title and date with logos

How can young people develop their competences as active members of the society as part of education? How can schools and organisations such as planning institutions collaborate? How are ongoing and recent academic and practical projects helping in developing action-oriented learning for sustainability?

Today’s young people are the key group influencing the sustainability of cities and the society of the future. In recent years, young people have become increasingly active in global environmental issues, while formal education has still lots to do in reaching its full potential in supporting the active roles of young people in the society and in the quest for sustainability. At the same time, urban and regional planners for example miss effective practices in collaborating with young people and using their input in planning.

THE AIM: This seminar brings together researchers and practitioners interested in ways to support young people’s agency and action-oriented learning and in strengthening the links between schools and the surrounding society. The aim is to learn from each other and build shared understanding of recent and ongoing work and knowledge needs on the theme.

LEARNING AND SHARING: Guest lectures by experts from UK, Denmark and Belgium are followed by a show presenting Finnish academic and practical projects. In the workshop we will create a map of recent and ongoi ng work related to the seminar theme and we will map knowledge needs, synergy potential and collaboration interests. The results of this will then be shared with all participants. After the seminar we also aim to raise wider discussion on the topic, by sharing videos from the lectures, examples from real life and the results of the research projects.

FOR WHOM: The seminar is free and open to all. Especially welcome are researchers, education and planning professionals and young people interested in the topic.

REGISTRATION: Please register by 7 September here. If you want to present a project, you can also prepare a 3 min video to be included in the project presentation video in the afternoon. You can submit the video by 7 September. Please see the instructions in the programme document below.

ORGANISERS: The seminar is organised by Urban and regional planning with the young generation - collective and intergenerational learning encouraging sustainability transformations - URGENT (Academy of Finland) and All Youth Want to Rule Their World - ALL-YOUTH (Strategic Research Council at the Academy of Finland).
