Objectives
Mixed use development refers to a practice where more than one type of activity, such as housing, jobs or services are assigned to the same building, groups of buildings, or area. The objective of the MIKSERI-project is to develop indices describing land use mix and apply these to the development of the walking, transit and car city fabrics at different scales, from neighborhood to the city region level. The project is funded by the LHT-network and the Ministry of the Environment, and it involves four case study areas: Joensuu, Kuopio, Lappeenranta and the Tampere city region.
Research Phases
The research is divided into two phases. In the first phase, a summary is provided on various methods and indicators for analyzing land use mix based on international literature. Based on this methodological review, GIS based indicators are developed for measuring land use mix at the city region level. After the development of the indicators, a more detailed examination of the changes in the land use mix is carried out together with the case cities. The project studies e.g. the objectives, implementation and development trends of land use mix in different city regions.
Results
The results of the project are put together into a report that summarizes the results of the realized analyses and the description of the used methods. Additionally, the report will comprise recommendations for the development of different types of areas. The results of the project support the comprehensive planning of land use, functions and sustainable transportation.
