Present position

I work as a research professor in the Marine Research Center. I’m co-leading a research group on microplastics (Roskasakki), which studies the abundance, distribution and impacts of microplastics in water, sediments and biota. My research interests include also predator-prey interactions in the pelagic food webs and impacts of non-indigenous species on the fod web functioning. I’m responsible of the non-indigenous species monitoring in the Baltic Sea. I’m leading national and international research projects and taking part to expert groups (e.g. EU, HELCOM, ICES).

Background

I’m an ecologist and marine biologist and have an adjunct professorship on aquatic sciences (University of Helsinki). I studied in the University of Turku and did my PhD thesis in the University of Helsinki (2001): Food selection and feeding behaviour of Baltic Sea mysid shrimps.

Present research interests

  • Long-term changes in zooplankton communities
  • Automatic imaging of zooplankton
  • Spread and impacts of non-indigenous species
  • Impacts of microplastics in the food webs
