Present role

My duties include leadership of the Marine and freshwater solutions unit and its activities, coordination of large national and international research projects, research on ecosystem based management and governance of aquatic ecosystems, Marine and Water Policies.

Background

I have research background on marine eutrophication, ecosystem functioning, and biological water quality indicators for inland and coastal waters. I have provided scientific and technical support for the EU-level implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and for the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive implementation in Finland and in the Baltic Sea.

Current research interests

Ecosystem based management and governance of marine and other aquatic ecosystems and ecosystem services, multidisciplinary research on socio-ecological systems, linking science and policy in support of the implementation of the EU marine and water policies, with specific focus on EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, Water Framework Directive, and EU Biodiversity Strategy 2020.
