Downloadable spatial datasets

The open geospatial datasets of the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) can be accessed by downloading the data packages.

Downloadable datasets are grouped into content categories according to the name of the dataset. By clicking on these categories, a list of download packages will open. The descriptions of downloadable geospatial data can be found in the metadata of each dataset, which is linked alongside the download package. The latest date of update is recorded both in the metadata and with the download package. The coordinate system of the datasets is ETRS-TM35FIN. All of Syke’s metadata can also be browsed through Syke’s metadata service.

Syke's metadata service

The geospatial data downloadable from the Finnish Environment Institute’s service is covered by the open data license. The license can be read on the page Uce licence and responsibilities.

INSPIRE download services

INSPIRE directive is an EU directive that aims to create common European spatial data infrastructure. The spatial data infrastructure with common data models enables EU member state’s public administration’s spatial data to be shared and used in policy making both nationally and internationally.

Finnish Environment Instute’s (Syke) INSPIRE download services are implemented as Atom feeds, according to Technical Guidance for INSPIRE Download Services 3.1. Data reported by Syke to the INSPIRE Directive I, II and III annexes are available for download in GML format according to INSPIRE application schemas. There are also data in ‘as is’ national structure in Esri shapefile and TIFF formats with ETRS-TM35FIN coordinate system (EPSG: 3067). Raster datasets within the scope of INSPIRE directive are available via WCS services that can be found on our web map services website.
