The information collected through environmental monitoring and inventories forms a significant part of the knowledge base for societal decision-making. It tells us how implemented environmental measures have impacted and what issues we need to focus on in the future.

The Finnish Environment Institute implements or coordinates over 70 monitoring and inventory programs. Remote sensing and satellite observations complement more traditional monitoring methods.

The monitoring programs fall under the following themes:

  • Open sea and coastal water monitoring
  • Mapping the biodiversity of underwater marine nature
  • Monitoring of lakes, rivers, and groundwater
  • Monitoring of air pollutants and greenhouse gases
  • Monitoring of terrestrial habitats and species
  • Waste-related monitoring
  • Monitoring related to soil, water management, and recycling
  • Monitoring related to communities and urban planning
