Life Cycle Assessment supports sustainability transformation

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an established analytical decision-support tool used by industry, researchers, policymakers, and authorities to identify environmental hotspots along the entire life cycle of products, services, and larger systems. LCA provides a methodological framework to quantify multiple environmental impacts of value chains simultaneously to avoid problem shifting. Syke applies strong methodological and modelling expertise in conducting transparent and independent LCA research.

At Syke, we apply LCA broadly to study the environmental impacts within different sectors of the economy, for example on energy systems, bioeconomy, consumer products and services, mobility, digital solutions and electronics, healthcare, or waste management and recycling.

Our expertise lays in studying process and system level impacts, but we carry out product LCAs, too. We use life cycle thinking (LCT) to explore environmental implications of the implementation of various policies and decisions and use LCA as a research tool supporting sustainability transformation of Finnish and global economies, focusing particularly on climate and circular economy solutions.

LCA-based methods, such as Product Environmental Footprint and carbon footprint, are increasingly used tools in political instruments to substantiate environmental claims. We collaborate with the academia, as well as with national and foreign authorities, to be at the forefront of policy development and implementation.

We strive to apply and develop LCA to diverse applications across various sectors and value chains in research projects in cooperation with different stakeholders, incl. universities, research organisations and companies.
