ENVIMATmaakunta models

The environmentally extended ENVIMAT model of the Finnish economy has been regionalized for all Finnish regions (19 in total).

In the regional models, production activities are divided into 137 industries and 225 product groups. Compared to the ENVIMAT model (148 industries, 229 product groups), some industries in primary production, energy supply, and public administration have been aggregated.

The regional models include greenhouse gas emissions and raw material use as environmental impacts. The models aim to refine the structure of production and consumption, natural resource extraction, energy production and consumption, and non-energy-related emissions in each region.

The monetary data, energy consumption, non-energy-related emissions, and natural resource extraction of the ENVIMAT model, which describes the entire Finnish economy, have been regionalized to the regional level using various data sources, while ensuring that the totals remain consistent with the full ENVIMAT model.

Key data sources

For monetary data, key sources include both open and purchased regional statistics from Statistics Finland, in addition to the ENVIMAT model's data.

For compiling regional energy consumption tables, data sources include the environmental administration's VAHTI information system, district heating statistics, vehicle fleet statistics from Traficom, VTT's Lipasto database, and background data from ALas calculations.

For allocating non-energy-related emissions to regions, data sources include statistics from Luke (livestock numbers, agricultural land areas), greenhouse gas inventory data, production capacity data of relevant plants, and background data from ALas calculations.

Use of regional models

Regional models can be used to carry out similar impact assessments as the national ENVIMAT model for, taking regional impacts into account. The models have been used, for example, in assessing the economic and environmental impacts of renewable energy investments and calculating consumption-based emissions of municipalities.
