Nordic and international hydrometry workshop 2026

Event
For more than a decade, this biennial workshop has brought together Nordic and international hydrometric agencies, researchers, and practitioners to collaborate, share innovations, and advance the science and practice of hydrometry. This year, the workshop will take place in Lapland, Finland in 21–25 September.
Hydrological measurements on the River Kemijoki in 1956. Several wooden boats are moored at the riverbank and connected by a makeshift working platform. Three people are carrying out field measurements, with a tent and measuring equipment visible on the platform. The black-and-white photograph documents hydrological fieldwork on a windy river.

Welcome to hydrometry workshop (NIHW)!

According to our records, Finnish Environment Institute´s predecessor Hydrografiska byrån (the hydrographical office of Finland) has organized field and measurement trips in Lapland dating back at least to 1921. Therefore, we would like to memorize those trips starting from 105 years ago and head towards future and development of hydrological monitoring and hydrometry together with the international community of hydrometry in NIHW2026.

Join us to strengthen collaboration and exchange advances in hydrometric methods, technologies, and ideas in an open and friendly forum. The workshop is organised by the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) and Economic Development Centre of Southwest Finland.

Registration is closed

Please contact: nihw2026@syke.fi

Location

The workshop will be held at the Arktikum Science Centre and Museum in Rovaniemi, Lapland. The venue will host workshop sessions, meetings, and the workshop dinner.

Address: Pohjoisranta 4, Rovaniemi, Finland.

Virtual attendance

It will also be possible to attend the workshop virtually. We will send teams-links for online participants a week prior to the meeting.

Programme

Monday

10.00–12.00 Registration at Arktikum

13.00-17.00 Workshop sessions:

  • Welcoming words
  • Brief introduction to hydrological monitoring in different countries
An introductory presentation on each country´s monitoring network (variables, station numbers, organization, public web pages for hydrological data) and/or recent developments and new aspects.

Tuesday

8.30–17.00 Workshop sessions

  • Brief introduction to hydrological monitoring in different countries (continues)
  • New hydrological and hydrometrical measurements
New measurement techniques, methods and applications in all fields of hydrology with a broad spectrum.
  • QRevInt/QRevMS
Introduction and latest developments of QRevInt and QRev MS in reviewing discharge measurements
  • International collaboration on tools, platforms and validation practices
Session on solutions and requirements different countries have on tools, platforms and validation practices. Aim is to promote discussions on how to collaborate if resources are limited or hydrological information systems need to be renewed.

Wednesday

8.30–17.00 Workshop and poster session

  • Rating curves
Rating curve methods and the associated uncertainties as well as recent developments in mathematical methods.
  • Discharge measurements and methods
Aim is to invite presentations on discharge measurements, used equipment and aspects that cause uncertainties in discharge measurements (e.g. slow water movement, vegetation, shallowness etc.) and how to take these into account.
  • QRevInt-QRevMS training session
Best way to get better at reviewing data is to review data! You can practice reviewing data with the session chair using QRevInt and QRevMS.
  • Poster session
  • QA/QC, data consistency and data quality criteria in hydrometry
QC/QA and data quality criteria methods in different countries as well as AI assistance in quality control and different tools in use.

  • Manufacturer´s presentations
Manufacturer´s session for equipment and application presentations
  • Surface velocimetry methods
Experiences and discussions on image-based techniques in different situations
  • Why a bad measurement is bad -training session
Ever had bad measurement results and wondered why? In this session you can have insights into the possible causes and advice how to measure better with the session chair and others.
  • Manufacturer´s indoor demo session
  • Winter hydrology and discharge measurements
Combined session on ice and snow monitoring and under-ice discharge measurements and estimations
