Research vessel Aranda opens its doors on Baltic Sea Day

On Baltic Sea Day, the research vessel Aranda will berth at Pier of Katajanokka (Katajanokanlaituri) in Helsinki. This is an excellent opportunity for the public to step aboard, explore the vessel and discover the fascinating world of marine research.

Open Ship: Research Vessel Aranda, Pier of Katajanokka, Helsinki

The public is warmly invited to visit the research vessel Aranda on Thursday, 27 August, 2026, from 12:00 to 19:00. Experts from the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke), the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) will be on board to answer questions about the Baltic Sea and marine research. Guides from Harakka Nature Centre will also introduce visitors to the marine life of Helsinki's coastal waters.

Visitors can climb up to the bridge or visit the research deck, where experts will present topics including Baltic herring research, hazardous shipwrecks, underwater noise, and monitoring the Baltic Sea using high-resolution satellite observations.

Although the Baltic Sea is Aranda's primary research area, it has also carried out scientific expeditions in the North Atlantic and the waters of the Antarctic.

Admission: Free

Accessibility: The research vessel is not accessible for people with reduced mobility. Children are welcome with a supervising adult. However, carrying infants on board is not recommended.  For safety reasons, Aranda does not accept kindergarten groups or other groups of children.

Visitors should be prepared to wait before boarding, as the number of people allowed on board at one time is limited.

Baltic Sea Day, initiated and coordinated by the John Nurminen Foundation, is celebrated annually on the last Thursday of August with various events and activities. The aim of the theme day is to highlight important maritime topics and inspire concrete actions for the benefit of the Baltic Sea. In addition to celebration, the goal is to is to raise awareness of the sea’s nature, culture, and history. In 2026, Baltic Sea Day will be celebrated on 27 August.
