Combating environmental crises is the cornerstone of overall safety

In 2024, the world's drift into an unpredictable geopolitical transition had an even stronger impact on the Finnish Environment Institute’s (Syke) operating environment.

The attention of societies shifted further away from the triple environmental crisis, the prevention of which would require stronger investments than at present, even more urgently. In addition to the geopolitical turbulence, concerns about the unsustainability of public finances and the stagnation of our economy have grown in Finland.

“Even in the new situation, research-based, cost-effective solutions are necessary, but demonstrating their functionality requires a new kind of argumentation. We must be able to justify that the prevention of environmental crises does not take away from security but is one of the cornerstones of a resilient and comprehensively secure society”, says Leif Schulman, General director in the Finnish Environment Institute.

“The research carried out at our institute creates a strong foundation for this kind of argumentation. And just like security, the economy can also be strengthened through measures that also promote overall sustainability”, Schulman continues.

Syke's annual report presents the key outputs of 2024 and Syke’s impact from the local to the global level.

Highlights from the annual report:

The quality of Syke's work is even higher than before and productivity has started to increase

In 2024, Syke's renewal began to be reflected in an increase in productivity. The number of both scientific and professional articles published was approximately 10% higher than in 2023. The value of the TOP 10 citation index, which describes the quality of scientific publications, has long been among the top research institutes in Finland, and it continued to rise. The relevance and usability of Syke's geospatial datasets is reflected in the increase in the number of interfaces used by almost a quarter. External funding accounted for 62 per cent of the budget. The funding share remained very high compared to the funding base of other Finnish research organisations.

The annual report is published annually

The annual report published annually by Syke includes the financial statements. Our operations and financial management are monitored by the steering ministries and the National Audit Office of Finland on the basis of the annual report.
