Johanna Waal appointed to Director of administration and finance of the Finnish Environment Institute

Johanna Waal has been appointed as Finnish Environment Institute's (Syke) new Director of finance and administration. She joins Syke from the Finnish Immigration Service, where she currently serves as Head of the legal and expert services unit. Waal will take up her position at Syke on 1 September 2026. A total of 57 applications were submitted for the post.

Johanna Waal has more than 15 years of experience in demanding leadership roles within central government, working in the fields of strategic management, performance management, administrative and process development, and human resources management. She joins Syke from her current role as Head of the Legal and Expert Services Unit at the Finnish Immigration Service. Prior to this, she held several senior management and managerial positions at the Finnish Tax Administration. She holds a Master of Laws degree.

As Director of finance and administration, Waal will lead Syke’s administrative services function. She will be responsible for ensuring that administrative and support services effectively and cost-efficiently support the Institute’s core mission. From the beginning of 2027, the unit’s responsibilities will be expanded to include a range of public authority services, and the unit will be renamed Administration and public authority services.
