Europe’s long-term thriving is conditional on sustainability transformation. EU’s next framework programme for research and innovation can best support resilience and competitiveness via aligning research agendas addressing ecological sustainability with social, economic and security efforts.

“Applied research combining scientific ambition and co-development with users and stakeholders is a necessity for Europe’s success”, says Eeva Primmer, Research director at the Finnish Environment Institute.

“This work advancing green and digital transition should be done in collaboration, for example, across administration, companies, cities and NGOs”, Primmer continues.

Syke's messages for the next EU's framework programme for research and innovation

  1. Europe’s resilience and security benefit from research-based solutions for environmental crises.
  2. Ambitious applied, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research is a prerequisite for addressing sustainability challenges.
  3. Sustainability transformation requires strong public-private collaboration on research, innovation and development as well as the engagement of civil society.
