Emission database for infrastructure construction

The Emissions database for infrastructure construction provides impartial data on the typical climate impacts of construction materials, products, transportation, and on-site activities used in Finland. This data enables the calculation of a comparable and transparent carbon footprint in infrastructure construction projects. The database is part of the CO2data service. The service is open to everyone and free of charge.

Emissions data for construction products, processes, and services

The data in the infrastructure construction emissions database is based on public sources, such as environmental product declarations for construction products. These sources have been analyzed, compared, and assessed in collaboration with infrastructure construction experts. The database compiles average data on the most common and typical construction products but does not include individual product-specific environmental declarations. Background studies are also available in the service.

The database is maintained and developed by the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) on behalf of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. A wide group of experts has contributed to its development. The infrastructure construction database was published in December 2022.

The service includes data on over 1,000 products and services. Construction products covered include various concrete products, steel and other metal products, wood products, natural stone products and aggregates, plastic products and pipes, asphalts, paints, fuels and blasting products, landscaping products, and recycled materials. Services include various transportation types and on-site operations such as construction machinery.

Information provided by the service:

  • Carbon footprint of construction products
  • Recycled material content of construction products
  • Waste factors of construction products on-site
  • Emission data of transportation
  • Emission data of construction machinery
  • Emission data of blasting operations
  • Emission data of fuels
  • Emission data of work performances

The database serves infrastructure construction experts

The infrastructure emissions database is designed primarily for construction professionals, but the information is valuable to anyone interested in the climate impacts of construction. It compiles average data on the most common and typical construction products but does not include environmental product declarations for individual products. The service also provides access to background studies. The infrastructure emissions database has already been integrated into several emissions calculation tools.

Low-carbon assessment in infrastructure construction is evolving

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (Väylävirasto) published a low-carbon assessment method for infrastructure construction in 2023. The infrastructure emissions database enables the assessment of climate impacts of infrastructure projects in a comparable manner, in accordance with the assessment method. Emissions calculations for infrastructure projects remain voluntary for now. Both the methodology and the emissions database will continue to be developed based on industry needs and evolving data.
