Anna-Kaisa Ronkanen

Research professor

Duties

As a Research Professor, I am responsible for leading and developing research in hydrology, water resources, and catchment-scale processes at the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke). My duties include preparing and coordinating large national and international research and development projects, negotiating research funding, and leading multidisciplinary project consortia. I lead Syke’s team in the Digital Waters Flagship and in the VISIO project, which develops a monitoring system for the green transition, and I actively contribute to European collaboration frameworks such as the Water4All partnership.I am also responsible for developing research infrastructures, strengthening the scientific quality of hydrological research, and supervising early-career researchers. In addition, I participate in national and international expert groups and promote the use of research-based knowledge in decision-making, particularly in areas related to water resources management, climate change adaptation, and the green transition.

Education and academic titles

Title of Docent, University of Oulu

DSc. (Tech.), University of Oulu

Research and expertise

My research focuses on catchment-scale hydrology and the integrated management of water resources. I study groundwater–surface water processes and interactions, long-term hydrological changes, and their links to nutrient and carbon processes as well as aquatic ecosystem status. A central theme in my work is the hydrological foundation of ecological restoration and the role of hydrological solutions in supporting ecosystem functioning and water quality.

My expertise includes hydrological modelling, analysis of monitoring data, and the development of digital methods and research infrastructures. I have also worked extensively on nature-based solutions, catchment restoration, and water management approaches, particularly in northern and cold-climate environments. In recent years, my research has increasingly focused on data-intensive hydrology and the use of high-frequency monitoring to support water resources management.
