Research and expertise

I work as the Group Manager of the Marine Analytics Group within the Research Infrastructure Unit, and as the Coordinator of Syke’s Marine Research Laboratory and the laboratories aboard the research vessel Aranda.

Monitoring the state of the Baltic Sea is one of Syke’s statutory responsibilities, and my team carries out much of this work in practice. Our responsibilities include sampling during Aranda’s regular monitoring cruises and conducting a wide range of analyses both onboard and at the Marine Research Laboratory in Viikki. We analyze, among other things, nutrients, oxygen and hydrogen sulfide concentrations, salinity, pH, and alkalinity, as well as parameters related to the carbon cycle, and microplastic concentrations in seawater. In addition, we support researchers in various experimental studies.

My role is to lead and develop the team’s activities, oversee the maintenance and development of the laboratories on Aranda and in Viikki, and coordinate work carried out in these facilities. I also serve as Facilities Coordinator for Syke’s premises in the EE building in Viikki, Helsinki.

I am a microbiologist by training, specializing in marine microbial ecology. Prior to my current role, I worked for several years as an entrepreneur and also completed a secondary-level qualification in business and commerce.
