Research and expertise

I develop, use and administer hydrodynamic and water quality simulation models for lakes, rivers and coasts as well as build comprehensive modelling systems. I have a M.Sc. in physics.

A major part of my role at SYKE is developing modelling systems capable of making good use of Finland's extensive environmental data sets. For example, the coastal modelling system (FICOS) is a modelling tool for regional authorities and research that combines several pre-existing models, simulation tools and datasets into a seamless whole. The system can be used to simulate the effects of nutrient sources to water formations on our coastal areas. The spatial resolution of the model can be flexibly changed by the end user to see small scale to regional scale effects.

I also maintain and develop SYKE's modelling capacity for the open source COHERENS hydrodynamic model. COHERENS is used to calculate 3-D transports in lakes and coastal areas and can be used with various water quality models. At SYKE we focus on developing the model's capabilities at fragmented boreal lakes which freeze and thaw annually.

My expertise include e.g. modelling, scientific computing, COHERENS, SOBEK, Matlab, Fortran, Python, Linux, hydrodynamic lake models, water quality modelling.
