Background
The unique and vulnerable nature in the Barents Region belongs to one of the largest remaining intact forest ecosystems on Earth. At the same time the boreal-arctic nature is under increased pressure from land-use, exploitation and climate change. The BPAN project promotes and supports the establishment of a representative protected area network in the Barents Region.
All Barents countries are parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). In 2010 the CBD Conference of Parties approved the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. The aim is to halt loss of biodiversity by 2020 globally, regionally and nationally. This project supports the targets of CBD in regional level, and participation of Finland in Arctic and Barents co-operation. This project is implemented as part of co-operation of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council’s Working Group on Environment.
Aims
The project promotes and supports the establishment of a representative network of protected areas in the Barents Region for conservation of biodiversity.
