The system has two data repositories: one for building data and one for land use data. The information system has been built as part of the Ministry of the Environment and the Finnish Environment Institute's Ryhti project. The authority responsible for the built environment information system is the Finnish Environment Institute.

The information system includes controlled access to key information on land use and construction, which is particularly necessary for the authorities to support various decision-making processes, plans and surveys. Examples of such information include building permits and land use data. The more uniformly available data will serve as a basis for new services and business.
