Abstract

CoWup identifies, analyzes, and quantifies risks to the marine environment of the Gulf of Finland in a changing geopolitical context. The project develops knowledge-based scenarios related to environmental risks and analyzes the cause-and-effect relationships associated with these risks. CoWup advances existing methods and creates new models and tools to assess the impacts of realized risks on the marine environment, also taking into account related uncertainties. This supports both emergency preparedness and long-term risk management in the Gulf of Finland and other coastal areas.

CoWup is an interdisciplinary project that integrates security studies with marine and environmental risk research. Stakeholder collaboration plays a key role in producing timely and relevant scientific knowledge, supporting the understanding of the causal relationships behind environmental risks stemming from geopolitical developments and the identification of necessary measures.

CoWup is part of the Strategic Research Council’s (SRC) WaWe Programme, themed “Water for Welfare, Security and Peace" (WAWE)
