Geospatial Statistics in Finland - Development of the building related statistics (GSFIBU)

  • Duration: 2025 - 2026
  • Status: Ongoing

This project pilots the national small area division model and develops building statistics using satellite imagery and GeoAI methods.

Project aim

The project aims to advance the use of geospatial data in statistical analysis. It is divided into two sections: one focusing on developing sub-area divisions and classifications, and another on identifying new construction projects through various data sources. The project will develop data production processes and create different methods for detecting changes in satellite imagery for statistical production. Additionally, project will focus on reviewing available artificial intelligence-based methods.

Project tasks:

  • Creating a test dataset based on the national small area division model and testing it in statistical production and data services.
  • Developing methods for maintaining and managing changes in small areas using various data sources (satellite images, Ryhti building and planning data, topographic database buildings, land registry).
  • Developing archipelago typology utilizing the same data and methods.
  • Methodically developing the statistics of new construction project starts using data from satellite images.
  • Testing different statistical and GeoAI methods within the project to improve data production.

Current

In May 2026 project published action recommendations to support the implementation of national small area division model in Finland. The document below is a translated version that describes the content of the recommendations publication.
