Water and marine data management system (PISARA)

PISARA gathers information regarding the state of surface waters and groundwater as well as the Baltic Sea into one place. The service is used by water and marine management experts, environmental permit officials, companies, communities and citizens.

Project description

Management of water resources and marine environments is systematic planning and operation covering the entire country, and its goal is to ensure the good condition of the waters. Various kinds of indicators are used to monitor the status of the waters and marine environment and assessment reports on the situation are published on a regular basis.

The Finnish PISARA (‘water drop’) information system provides authorities with tools for status assessments, improving data transparency, communicating results for official use and EU reporting.

The following features have been implemented in the PISARA information system:

  • Status assessment tool for marine waters, surface waters and groundwater
  • Status indicator calculation service
  • Planning measures tool for improving the status of waters
  • Groundwater management tools 
  • Maps, search and analysis tools

The following features will be implemented next:

  • Open service for authorities, associations, companies and citizens 
  • Observation data import tool
  • Management of the hydrological monitoring stations
  • EU reporting
