Finland's leading marine research
We produce information on the state and changes of the Baltic Sea to support decision-making. In collaboration, we develop solutions for marine care and protection.
The goal is a good status of the Baltic Sea
We assess the impact of human activities on the Baltic Sea and the prerequisites for its sustainable development. We coordinate and implement national long-term monitoring of the sea's status and study marine functions in a multidisciplinary manner. We act as experts in the planning of Finland's marine management, the implementation of EU marine legislation, and the Baltic Sea Environmental Protection Convention.
We work for the good of the marine environment in the Baltic Sea. We work in close cooperation with European universities, research institutes and enterprises. Our work also extends to the Arctic region and the developing countries.

Okko Outinen: The spread of aquatic non-indigenous species via international shipping continues
Ecological roulette is a term used to describe the human-induced spread of aquatic non-indigenous species (NIS), since all new species introductions do not necessarily cause harm, but it is impossible to predict which species will be harmful – and where, and when, writes Okko Outinen in his Ratkaisuja blog.
