Introduction

My area of expertise is climate and sustainable use of natural resources. My goal is to initiate new research openings to advance the implementation of climate policy and develop assessment methods and knowledge bases based on lifecycle thinking regarding the significance of natural resource use for climate solutions, ensuring that significant harm to the environment is avoided. My research also includes decision-making support, where economic and social dimensions are brought alongside climate and environmental information. My task is to support national, municipal, and regional information needs as well as the development of Syke's research expertise and international networking in this field.

I am a systems analytical researcher of consumption and production systems. I have developed impact assessment methods for lifecycle assessments internationally. I have led sustainability assessments based on lifecycle assessments for various industrial sectors and agriculture, material flow studies of the Finnish national economy, climate impact assessments of forest utilization, and projects related to transport and consumption. I have been an expert member of several working groups and support municipalities and regions in their climate work with my expertise. Currently, I am researching means to accelerate the implementation of Finland's climate policy and conducting related assessments, especially from the perspective of EU obligations and Finland's carbon neutrality goal. I currently serve as the chair of the Finnish Climate Panel.

Tasks

  • Research and project leadership related to the low-carbon transition of consumption and production systems
  • Policy and sustainability assessments and related assessment method development (climate, energy, natural resources, environment)
  • Interaction related to climate, energy, and natural policy with officials, decision-makers, and regional actors

Research interests

  • Cost-effective and acceptable climate change mitigation measures (generally)
  • Lifecycle climate and environmental impacts of different natural resource uses
  • Sustainability assessments of consumption and production systems
  • Forest utilization and climate impacts
  • Climate policy actions - EU, Finland, regions, and municipalities
