Legal basis for processing personal data
In accordance with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the processing of personal data is based on the consent (Article 6(1)(a)).
Permission to collect personal data collection and purpose of the research
By accepting to participate in the study of biodiversity in urban yards as part of the BioStep project, the person agrees to disclose the following personal data: Postcode, e-mail and/or telephone number.
By accepting to participate in the eDNA study on biodiversity in urban yards, the person agrees to disclose the following personal data: name, e-mail and/or phone number.
By accepting to participate in the BioStep resident survey, a person agrees to disclose the following personal data: year of birth, gender, level of education, salary level, employment status, name of home street or road and house’s number, zip code, general knowledge about one's health and well-being. This information is collected through a questionnaire from the study participants themselves.
Purposes of the research
We collect and process personal data in order to determine the use and significance of their own yards by residents of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Personal data is collected from survey participants and resident survey respondents when they answer the survey. The data is collected using the Webropol online survey tool. We collect, analyze and store information confidentially and anonymously, meaning that it is not possible to identify an individual respondent from the materials or results we publish. In the survey, we map out the attitudes and values of residents related to the biodiversity of courtyards and their interaction with urban nature (animals, plants). The results of the survey will be utilised in the research of the BioStep and Residents projects. Results related to the material collected by the survey are published in international and national scientific and professional journals and presentations of conferences and workshops.
Recipients and protection of personal data
Personal data will be stored on the Syke’s server, where only authorised project members have access to the data. University of Helsinki as a partner of the BioStep project are entitled to use the anonymised data. All partners that process personal data have taken technical and organisational measures necessary to protect personal data and require these measures from all the service providers used.
Data storage, processing and use
Collected data is used for scientific purposes only. For the analysis of the data collected and for the purpose of data storage in public repositories of scientific data, the data will be treated as follows. Names, phone numbers, home addresses and email addresses will not be made public, and it will thus not be possible to reconduct them to the rest of the data. The analysis of the aggregated data will be published in scientific articles and other reports, which will be publicly available.
The rights of the study participant
In accordance with Article 6(1) of the EU General Data Protection Regulation we process your personal data based on your consent. Participation in this study is voluntary. Should you discontinue your participation, you will not be subject to any negative consequences, but information gathered from you up until the point of cessation of your participation may be used in the study according to this Privacy Notice and the applicable data protection legislation. According to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to: know for what purposes and in what ways we process your personal data; obtain a copy of the personal data processed; withdraw your consent at any time; ask us to correct the inaccurate or incorrect information of your personal data we process. If we rectify information based on your request, we are obliged, as far as possible, to inform all those to whom the information was previously disclosed of the rectification; have your personal data deleted and to restrict the processing of your personal data, and/or request the transfer of your data to another controller. You have the right to lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority, the Data Protection Ombudsman (see more: tietosuoja.fi).
